AWARD CRITERIA


Women in STEM Award Criteria

Southeast and Central Virginia is home to world-leading scientific and engineering talent and capabilities. This Award will recognize an exceptional woman in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM), who has pioneered new discoveries and/or been instrumental in bringing the benefits of those discoveries to market for economic and social impact.

The winner of this Award will have shown persistence and tenacity in pursuing scientific excellence of truly world-class quality. The judges will be looking for a significant track record of discovery, research and development.

The Richmond & Southeast NAWBO Foundation Board suggests the following criteria to be considered in the Women in STEM Award.

NOMINATIONS CRITERIA

Minimum Nominee Requirements

To qualify for the Women in STEM Award, nominees must:

  • Hold a business, technology or scientific leadership role in a company whose primary product is in the STEM field OR maintain a leadership position in the STEM department of a non-STEM organization with authority over any STEM related operations
  • Hold ownership or be employed by a Virginia-based business/organization or a division/subsidiary with a significant leadership role in Virginia
  • Hold a leadership or STEM position with a STEM company OR hold a STEM position in a non-STEM company
  • Perform a managerial or ownership role within her organization and hold budgetary responsibility
  • Have a minimum of one year of managerial experience within the current organization as of the date of the nominations deadline (December 15, 2016)
  • Have a primary residence in Virginia
  • Show evidence of impact being made in a STEM environment.
  • Have pioneered new discoveries to market or made headway in this sector.
  • Can be seen as a role model to encourage other girls/women into STEM research and/or business.
  • In order to be considered, all nominations must be received by DECEMBER 15, 2016.
  • NAWBO Board and Foundation members are not eligible.

NOMINATION FORM

Entrepreneur of the Year Award Criteria

Nominees for this award must be able to demonstrate success in leading a business and excellence in facing challenges, maximizing opportunities, and achieving goals. Nominees should demonstrate innovation in business, product, service, or ideas. Nominees must articulate how they have overcomeobstacles and responded to adversity on their journey to success.

NOMINATIONS CRITERIA

  • Nominee must be a current female business owner, involved in the daily operations, and a decision maker of the organization.
  • Nominee’s business must have been in continuous active business at least five years effective current year’s deadline with strong financial performance.
  • Nominee’s business must be headquartered in the Metro Richmond or Southeast Virginia
  • Nominee shall support other women business owners when possible.
  • Nominee shall be perceived by the public in her community as a leader.
  • Nominee shall have a personal commitment to community involvement.
  • Not-for-profit and similar organizations do not qualify.
  • NAWBO membership is not required.
  • You may nominate yourself or someone else.
  • Women who have received this award within the last 5 years (as of current year nomination deadline date) may not be nominated for this award.
  • After nominations close, NAWBO will contact with the nominee advising her of her nomination    and requesting additional information to support her nomination. The submission of this additional information is optional, and the nominee can still be considered if additional information is not provided.
  • In order to be considered, all nominations must be received by DECEMBER 15, 2016.
  • NAWBO Board and Foundation members are not eligible.

Rising Star Award Criteria

Nominees for this award must be able to demonstrate how their business has made a visible impact in the industry or community, provided a unique or unusual service or product, or provided a traditional service or product in a unique or highly successful way. Nominees must articulate how they have overcome obstacles and responded to adversity on their journey to success.

NOMINATIONS CRITERIA

  • Nominee must be a current female business owner, involved in the daily operations, and a decision maker of the organization.
  • Nominee’s business must have been in continuous active business less than five years effective current year’s deadline with strong financial performance.

NOMINATION FORM

Community Leader Award Criteria

A nominee for this award must be able to demonstrate that she goes the extra mile to get involved in programs and activities that benefit the community in which she lives and works. This individual displays leadership, initiative, creativity and dedication to her community. Through her involvement, she inspires others to get involved and to make a difference in the lives of others. When selecting the recipient, the Awards Committee will place heavy consideration on community service and community activism.

NOMINATIONS CRITERIA

  • The nominee does not need to be a current business owner but must be a woman located in the Metro Richmond area or Southeast Virginia.
  • The nominee shall be perceived by the public in her communities as a leader. She shall motivate and inspire others to accomplish goals or objectives for the betterment of the community. She should show initiative by creating or developing programs, projects or activities that positively impact the community. She ideally must propose or have shown creative approaches to meet community needs and show her dedication to the community by accomplishing much within the community by her pursuit, courage, enthusiasm and zeal.
  • Nominees for not-for-profit and similar organizations may qualify.
  • NAWBO membership is not required.
  • You may nominate yourself or someone else.
  • Women who have received this award within the last 5 years (as of current year nomination deadline date) may not be nominated for this award.

NOMINATION FORM

Student Entrepreneur of the Year Award Criteria

Nominees for this award must be (1) a student currently enrolled in high school, college or graduate school and (2) successful in the development of a business and/or able to demonstrate a viable business plan. Nominees should demonstrate innovation in business, product, service, or ideas. Nominees should articulate how they have overcome obstacles and responded to adversity on their journey to success as well as how they expect to succeed in and grow the described business.  The University of Richmond Student Entrepreneur of the Year will be awarded $2,000 in scholarship money.

NOMINATIONS CRITERIA

  • Nominee must be a female student currently enrolled in high school, college or graduate school. Both full-time and half-time students are eligible, but in order to qualify for this award, a half-time student must be taking a minimum half-load of courses as defined by her institution.
  • Nominee must reside and/or attend school in the Metro Richmond area or Southeast Virginia.
  • Nominee must have good academic standing (Nominee will be asked to provide an official school transcript). 
  • Nominee must have a written recommendation from a teacher, counselor or community leader. 
  • Nominee shall be perceived as an innovator, developer and/or leader.
  • Nominee shall demonstrate a personal commitment to community involvement.
  • NAWBO membership is not required.
  • You may nominate yourself or someone else.
  • Women who have received this award within the last 5 years (as of current year nomination deadline) may not be nominated for this award.
  • Official transcripts can also be transmitted electronically via a secure email transmission from the educational institution to info@nawborichmond.org.
